What is a MPD (Meter Protection Device)?
MPD installation is a shortened name for the installation of a Meter Protection Device to your residential or commercial properties switchboard. An MPD is essentially a service fuse which is installed in your switchboard or fuse box and acts as an isolation point to protect the meter in the event that there is an electrical issue or short circuit. An MPD must be installed to each meter, therefore typical setups require multiple MPD’s to installed. The installation of MPD’s must be completed by a level 2 electrician. True Local Electricians are level 2 electricians servicing Sydney. As level 2 electricians we typically come across MPD installation Sydney jobs because a residence has received a defect report by Ausgrid, vector or endeavour energy. In this case the home owner is given 21 days to install an MPD by a ASP level 2 electrician in Sydney and have the defect cleared by submission of a NOSW application. Usually, you will get a notice from your electricity meter provider specifying “We were unable to replace your electricity meter due to Isolation or shared fuse”. This simply means they were unable to isolate the electricity meter. To replace the meter an approved MPD must be installed. In new installations, an MPD is installed with a new electricity meter. Most switchboard constructed before 2018 will not contain an MPD as it was only introduced in the 2018 update to the NSW service and installation rules for electrical systems. Isolation procedure involves the installation of MPD (Meter Protection Device) into your meter board that isolates your meter from the rest of the meters, facilitating it to be upgraded safely and without disrupting the power supply. This procedure is more complex and needs a higher level of electrical certification such as a Level 2 electrician. In the event that we as Level 2 electricians are performing any work to existing switchboards, we must install a new MPD to be complaint with the wiring rules. True Local Electricians provide all SPD & MPD Installation Sydney Services.
